Uncle Remus

…Born in Georgia, he worked for a plantation owner who also published a weekly newspaper from 1862 to 1866, during which time he became familiar with the folk tales, customs, and dialects of black slaves. He later served as an editor for the Atlanta Constitution (1876-1900), serializing the Uncle Remus stories for the paper, which were collected into several volumes, including The Songs and Sayings of Uncle Remus (1880). The stories are told by Uncle Remus, an old servant who was once a slave, to his master's son, and feature black folk tales that feature rabbits and foxes that act like humans, told with humor in the black dialect. …
