In the field of novels, particularly noteworthy was the emergence of urban, anti-realist or fantastical writers such as Borges, author of “Fantastic Facts” and “Aleph,” Adolfo Bioy Casares (1914- ), known for “The Invention of Morel,” Leopoldo Marechal (1898-1970), author of “Adan Buenos Aires,” and Onetti, author of “A Vie Ephemera.” If it had not gone through this period, in which attempts were made to break away from the aesthetics of novels that were so obsessed with the social and political realities of the so-called Third World, the boom in Latin American novels that has been a topic of worldwide discussion since the 1960s would not have occurred. …
