Dutch novelist. Born in The Hague. He spent several years of his childhood in Java because his father was a judicial officer in the Dutch East Indies. After returning to the Netherlands, he studied at the Hague High School. He started out writing poetry, but then devoted himself to prose. He published a succession of masterpieces, including his breakthrough work, Elline Veere (1889), and continued to write prolifically until his death as an international author characterized by delicate, naturalistic psychological descriptions. His representative works, such as The Book of Small Figures (4 volumes, 1901-03) and Old Men (1906), which followed the aforementioned Elline Veere, which is about a woman's life, are based on the author's own view of fate and depict the upper class of The Hague at the time, which was decadent due to arrogance and convention.

オランダの小説家。ハーグに生まれる。父が当時のオランダ領東インドに司法官として在職したため少年期の数年をジャワ島で過ごし，帰国後ハーグの高等学校に学ぶ。はじめ詩を書いたが，やがて散文に専念し，出世作《エリネ･フェーレ》(1889)をはじめ次々に大作を発表し，繊細な自然主義的心理描写を特徴とする国際的作家として，没年に至るまで旺盛な執筆活動を続けた。一女性の生涯をテーマとした前述の《エリネ･フェーレ》に続く《小人物たちの書》4巻(1901‐03)，《老人たち》(1906)などの代表作は作者自身の宿命観を基調として，おごりと因襲で退廃した当時のハーグの上流階級を描いたもの。
