1863‐1923 Dutch novelist. Born in The Hague. He spent several years of his childhood in Java because his father was a judicial officer in the Dutch East Indies. After returning to the Netherlands, he studied at the Hague High School. He started out writing poetry, but then devoted himself to prose. He published a succession of masterpieces, including his breakthrough work, Elline Veere (1889), and continued to write prolifically until his death as an international author characterized by delicate, naturalistic psychological descriptions. His representative works, such as The Book of Small Figures (4 volumes, 1901-03) and Old Men (1906), which followed the aforementioned Elline Veere, which is about a woman's life, are based on the author's own view of fate and depict the upper class of The Hague at the time, which was decadent due to arrogance and convention.
