General semantics

Japanese: 一般意味論 - いっぱんいみろん（英語表記）general semantics

A linguistic theory that studies the role that symbols, especially language, play in humans and how humans react to them. Polish mathematician A. Korzybski systematized it in his Science and Sanity (1933). Its main goal is to prevent problems in linguistic life that arise from confusing the abstract meaning of words with the things they refer to in concrete situations. To that end, it advocates avoiding careless assertions, placing importance on context, being careful about the degree of abstraction of words, and abandoning binary thinking. The International Society for General Semantics has been formed and publishes its journal, ETC.

記号，特に言語が人間に対してどのような役割を果し，また人間がいかに反応するかを研究する言語理論。ポーランドの数学者 A.コージブスキーが，『科学と正気』 Science and Sanity (1933) で体系づけた。言葉の抽象的な意味とそれが具体的場面で指示する事物との混同から生じる，言語生活上の障害を防ぐことをおもな目標とする。そのために，不用意な断定を避けること，文脈を重視すること，言葉の抽象性の度合いに気をつけること，二値的思考をやめること，などを説く。国際一般意味論協会 International Society for General Semanticsが結成されており，機関誌"ETC"を発行している。
