[Life] Jogan 4 (630) [Died] Kushi 1 (700). September 26. Luoyang, China. A famous minister of the reign of Empress Wu Zetian. Born in Taiyuan, Bingzhou. His pen name was Huaiying. He held various offices from Mingjing onwards, and in 691 he became prime minister under Empress Wu. The following year he was slandered and disparaged, but in 697 he was appointed prime minister again and died in the Internal History. He was a strong-willed man, and he persuaded Wu Sansi to give up his bid to become crown prince, thus protecting his position as the throne of the Tang dynasty. He recommended many future great ministers, such as Zhang Xiangzhi and Yao Chong, and in his later years he was highly regarded by Empress Wu as a national elder.
