[Died] Kushi 1 (700). September 26. Luoyang, China. A famous minister of the reign of Empress Wu Zetian. Born in Taiyuan, Bingzhou. His pen name was Huaiying. He held various offices from Mingjing onwards, and in 691 he became prime minister under Empress Wu. The following year he was slandered and disparaged, but in 697 he was appointed prime minister again and died in the Internal History. He was a strong-willed man, and he persuaded Wu Sansi to give up his bid to become crown prince, thus protecting his position as the throne of the Tang dynasty. He recommended many future great ministers, such as Zhang Xiangzhi and Yao Chong, and in his later years he was highly regarded by Empress Wu as a national elder.

中国，則天武后朝の名臣。并州太原の人。字は懐英。明経から諸官を歴任，武后の天授2 (691) 年宰相となり，翌年讒 (ざん) にあい貶 (おと) されたが，神功1 (697) 年再び宰相に任じられ，内史で没した。硬骨の人で，武三思の立太子をいさめて断念させ，唐の国祚を守った。張柬之 (かんし) ，姚崇 (ようすう) らのちの名臣を多く推薦し，晩年国老として武后に重んじられた。
