International Bank for Reconstruction and Development . One of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. An international financial institution established by the Bretton Woods Agreement for the purpose of providing loans for reconstruction and development after World War II. It opened in 1946. Currently, it focuses on loans for industrial development in developing countries. Its headquarters are in Washington.
