The Miyoshi Trio

Three Miyoshi clan members made up the Miyoshi government, which was divided into Kinai provinces during the Warring States period. When Miyoshi Nagayoshi died in 1564 (Eiroku 7), Sogo Shigemasa (Miyoshi Yoshitsugu) was installed as his adopted son, but a gap arose between Matsunaga Hisahide and the Miyoshi clan over control of the government, and especially after the assassination of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru in May 1565, the clan split apart. Miyoshi Nagayuki, Miyoshi Masayasu, and Iwanari Tomomichi broke off ties with the Matsunaga clan of Yamato and Tamba and opposed them, with their bases in Yamashiro and Settsu, and the flames of war spread throughout Kinai provinces. It was during this conflict that the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple was set ablaze. The Three Brothers supported Yoshihide Ashikaga, the son of Yoshitsuna Ashikaga, as the successor to the shogunate, and tried to maintain the Miyoshi government in cooperation with Shinohara Nagafusa of Awa. However, the government collapsed when Yoshitsugu Ashikaga and his relatives, Miyoshi Yasunaga, defected, and Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto in 1568 (Eiroku 11) and took control of the Kinai region.

戦国期に畿内(きない)に割拠した三好政権を構成した三人の同族衆。1564年（永禄7）三好長慶(ながよし)が没すると十河重存(そごうしげまさ)（三好義継(よしつぐ)）が猶子(ゆうし)として擁立されたが、政権の主導権をめぐって松永久秀(ひさひで)と三好氏一族の間に隙が生じ、とくに65年5月の将軍足利義輝(あしかがよしてる)暗殺後は分裂状態となった。そこで三好長逸(ながゆき)、三好政康(まさやす)、岩成友通(いわなりともみち)の3名は山城(やましろ)、摂津を地盤に、大和(やまと)・丹波(たんば)の松永氏と絶縁して対抗し、戦火は畿内全域に及んだ。東大寺大仏殿が炎上したのもこの争乱のときである。三人衆は将軍跡目に足利義維(よしつな)の子義栄(よしひで)を擁立し、阿波(あわ)の篠原長房(しのはらながふさ)らと呼応して三好政権を維持しようとしたが、当主義継や一族の三好康長らの離反と1568年（永禄11）の織田信長の入京、畿内制圧によりその政権は瓦解(がかい)した。
