Born: January 28, 1858, Eisden Died: December 16, 1940. De Bedelaer Dutch physician and anthropologist. Discoverer of Java Man. He studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam, where he became a lecturer in comparative anatomy in 1886. He became interested in discovering the ancestors of humankind, and in 1887 he left the university and volunteered for the Dutch Navy stationed in the East Indies. He first attempted excavations on his own in Sumatra, then excavated in Java with government assistance, discovering the teeth, skull, and femur of Pithecanthropus erectus in 1891-92. He returned to Europe in 1895, and became a professor at the University of Amsterdam and director of the Teyler Museum.
