Died: December 16, 1940. De Bedelaer Dutch physician and anthropologist. Discoverer of Java Man. He studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam, where he became a lecturer in comparative anatomy in 1886. He became interested in discovering the ancestors of humankind, and in 1887 he left the university and volunteered for the Dutch Navy stationed in the East Indies. He first attempted excavations on his own in Sumatra, then excavated in Java with government assistance, discovering the teeth, skull, and femur of Pithecanthropus erectus in 1891-92. He returned to Europe in 1895, and became a professor at the University of Amsterdam and director of the Teyler Museum. His main work was "Pithecanthropus erectus, a menschenähnliche Übergangsform aus Java" (1874).

[Died] June 11, 1924. Paris. French composer, organist, and music theorist. He studied composition under C. Thomas at the Paris Conservatory, and graduated in 1861 with the Prix de Rome. After returning from Italy, he became choirmaster of Saint-Clotilde and then organist at the Saint-Madeleine Church. In 1971, he became professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory, and served as its director for nine years from 1996. His works include Traité de contrepoint et de fugue (1901) and Traité d'harmonie (21), and his works include operas, ballets, oratorios, masses, and orchestral pieces.

[died] c.1320 French jurist and political thinker. He argued that the Holy Roman Emperor, who was virtually powerless, should be replaced by the French monarchy to lead European politics, and that therefore the king should centralize various powers within France, especially limiting the economic privileges of the Pope in France, and supported King Philip IV. He was a representative of the Estates General in 1302 and 1308. His works include De recuperatione Terrae Sanctae (c.1306) (On the Restoration of the Holy Land).

Died August 10, 1723. French politician and cardinal. He was the tutor of Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who became regent, and assisted him in the regency. In 1716, he allied with England, and expanded it to include the Netherlands and Austria, forming the Quadruple Alliance against Spain (1717-18), and thwarted a Spanish conspiracy to take the French throne. In 1720, he became Archbishop of Cambrai, and in 1721, he became a cardinal.

[Died] 1880. Brussels. Belgian history painter and portrait painter. He studied under Thomas Couture in Paris, and later developed a deep connection with Gustave Courbet. After returning to Belgium, he contributed to the founding of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, and served as editor-in-chief of its journal in 1871. His representative work is The Swan (1858, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium).

Died: February 17, 1848. Paris. French Roman Catholic missionary. Belonged to the Paris Foreign Missions Society. From 1792 to 1823, he worked in South India, but was unsuccessful. He returned to Paris and became the leader of the society. He left behind a French translation of the Panchatantra (1826) and other works on Indian customs.

フランスの作曲家,オルガン奏者,音楽理論家。パリ音楽院で作曲を C.トマについて学び,1861年ローマ大賞を得て卒業。イタリアから帰ってのち,聖クロチルドの合唱長を経て聖マドレーヌ聖堂のオルガン奏者。 71年パリ音楽院和声法教授,96年から9年間同院長。著書に『対位法とフーガ教本』 Traité de contrepoint et de fugue (1901) ,『和声法教本』 Traité d'harmonie (21) ,作品にはオペラ,バレエ音楽,オラトリオ,ミサ曲,管弦楽曲などがある。
