He is famous in the history of psychiatry as the only case of psychosis analyzed described by S. Freud, and as the case that provided material for Freud's theory of paranoia, which explains the relationship between delusions and homosexuality. Born in Leipzig, he studied law and became president of the Court of Appeal in Dresden, but at around the age of 50 he suffered from schizophrenia, and during a period of remission he wrote down his symptoms and published them as "The Experiences of a Neurotic Patient" (1903). Freud examined this from a psychoanalytic standpoint and published "Psychoanalytic Considerations on an Autobiographically Described Case of Paranoia" (1911).

S.フロイトによって記述された唯一の精神病の分析例で，妄想と同性愛の関連性を説くフロイトの妄想論に素材を提供した症例として，精神医学史に名高い人物。ライプチヒに生まれ，法学を学んでドレスデンの控訴院院長にまでなったが，50歳ころ精神分裂病に罹患し，寛解期に自分の病状を書き留めて《ある神経病患者の体験記》(1903)として刊行した。フロイトは，これを精神分析の立場から検討して《自伝的に記述されたパラノイアの一症例に関する精神分析的考察》(1911)を発表した。
