1878‐1965 Arab nationalist leader born in Egypt. Graduated from the Military Academy in Istanbul in 1904 and was assigned to Macedonia, where he joined the Young Turk officer organization. When the Young Turk revolution in 1909 brought Ottomanism to the forefront, he began organizing the Arab movement for autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. He helped Yemen achieve independence from the Ottoman Empire and intensified the anti-Italian national struggle in Libya, while also founding the Caftan Society and the military organization Ahd (Covenant) in 1914, and became the core of the Arab independence movement during World War I.
