It is a branch of Kabuki dance and Japanese music. It is based on a true story about a wealthy Osaka merchant, Wanya Kyuemon (whose character name was Kyubei), who fell in love with a prostitute from Shinmachi, Matsuyama Tayu, and was imprisoned in a tatami room after spending his money lavishly. He then went mad, escaped from the prison, and wandered the town. In Joruri, there is the Gidayu "Wanya Kusue Matsuyama" written by Kikai On and the "Wanya Kusue no Matsuyama" (3 volumes, upper, middle, and lower) composed by the first Miyako Tayu Ichichu, but the relationship between the two is unclear. In addition to the second volume of the Itchubushi, "Wankyu Kyoran Doyuki," which has been passed down to the present day, other representative works today include "Mitsumen Wankyu" (commonly known as "Utaemon Wankyu") performed by Nakamura Utaemon III and IV, "Wankyuiro Shinsouri" composed by Tokiwazu Mojibei III and told as so-joruri, and "Genwankyu" composed by Kiyomoto Enjutayu V. In dance, in addition to the most popular Nagauta piece "Futari Wankyu," "Hitori Wankyu" ("Shiki no Wankyu") danced by Nakamura Tomijuro I has been passed down by the Fujima school and is also performed as "Wankyu" in the Inoue school.
