The capital of North Rhine-Westphalia in mid-west Germany. An international commercial and trade city on the right bank of the lower Rhine. Population 569,400 (2000). Located along the north-south main railway line, it is the junction of the railway to the Netherlands, and has an international airport and a river port. As a result, companies and financial institutions from Germany and other countries are concentrated in the city. There is an exhibition center with an area of over 130,000 square meters, where various international exhibitions such as women's clothing, shoes, and boats are held. International conferences are also frequently held in the city, and it is known as a conference city. It is also the largest concentration of Japanese companies in Germany, and the number of Japanese residents in the city and surrounding areas is about 9,000 (the largest in Germany), and the Japan Center with Japanese department stores and hotels is located there. Industrial production includes steel, machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, glass, printing, and chemicals.

The city began as a fishing settlement on the right bank of the Rhine where the Düssel River joins it, and in 1288 it obtained city rights and became the residence of the Principality of Berg. In the 17th century, Elector Johann Wilhelm (1658-1716) lived in the city, which flourished as a city of Baroque art. During the French Revolution, Napoleon remodeled the city, and it was also called "Little Paris." In the 19th century, it gave birth to the Düsseldorf School of German Romantic painting, and was also the birthplace of the poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856). From the mid-19th century, it developed as an industrial city, with a population of over 100,000 in 1882, and in 1946 it became the state capital.

The core of the city is the old town area, which borders the Rhine and contains the 16th century town hall and market square, with pedestrianised streets and numerous bars and restaurants, attracting a constant stream of visitors. The business district stretches from Breitstrasse, which runs north-south along the east side of the old town, to the new town area to the east, with Königstrasse (commonly known as Kö), which runs along the moat of the old town, forming the main shopping street. The former palace gardens on the northern edge of the old town are now a green park, and include the art museum, state museum and modern art gallery (former hunting lodge). In the suburbs you'll find the Neanderthal site and the Mini-Dome, Europe's largest miniature park.
