Year of death: 1181 Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the late Heian period. His name can also be written as Sukenaga. His father was Jokuro Sukekuni. His mother is said in the Azuma Kagami to be the daughter of Kiyohara Takehira, but is unknown. The Jō clan advanced from Dewa Province to Echigo Province in the late 11th century, and was a powerful samurai group that expanded its influence throughout the northern part of Echigo Province throughout the 12th century. Sukenaga was the direct descendant of the clan, and is thought to have had his base in Okuyamasho. In January 1181 (Jishō 5), at Sukenaga's request, an imperial edict was issued to subjugate the Genji clan in the eastern provinces, and he attempted to kill Kiso Yoshinaka in Shinano Province, but died of illness before he could accomplish his goal. In January 1201, Suenaga's younger brother Nagashige raised an army in Kyoto to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. In response, Suenaga's son Sukemori and his sister Sakanoda rose up in rebellion at Torisakayama in Echigo Province, but were defeated by the shogunate forces, and the Shiro clan was wiped out.
