Dining table

Decks come in a variety of shapes, including rectangular, square, oval, and circular. Some have foldable decks, while others can be pulled out for more spacious use. For home use, most are made of wood, such as oak, beech, cherry, and birch. For practical purposes, decks with melamine veneer attached to the surface are widespread, but wooden ones have become popular recently. For high-end products, teak or walnut veneer is used. The standard dimensions for one person are 60 centimeters wide and 45 to 50 centimeters deep. The appropriate deck height is 60 to 70 centimeters.

Reception table

The deck is usually rectangular in shape. The materials are similar to those used for dining tables, but high-quality materials are preferred. The deck is about 40 to 60 centimeters high.

This refers to a small reception table. A nest table is a set of several tables that can be stacked together and separated as needed.

Conference table

Most are rectangular, but there are also oval and modified oval, circular, etc. Wood, steel, and mixed types are the most common materials, but wood is for high-end use, while steel and mixed types are for practical use. Other than that, there is the zataku and chabudai used in Japanese-style rooms. The zataku is a Japanese-style reception table, and is also called a karatsukue (Chinese desk) because it is made from Karaki wood such as rosewood and ebony. Depending on the shape of the legs, it is called a thunder pattern, a rice scoop, or a drumstick. The chabudai is a dining table, and its legs can be fixed or foldable. Before the war, it was a necessity used in most homes, but now it has been replaced by chair-style tables and is rarely seen.

Western

In ancient Egypt, the basic form of the table was for offerings to the gods and for the nobility to eat. In Greece, the two also had the same shape. In ancient Rome, in addition to wood, tables were made of bronze and marble, and the legs were carved, making them increasingly luxurious.

In the Middle Ages, dining tables were made with a base and legs that could be disassembled. In the Renaissance, the base was attached to the legs and richly decorated with carvings. In the Baroque period, inlay, marquetry, and gold lacquer were added, making them even more luxurious. However, in the 19th century, functionality became more important than decoration, and the shape became simpler.

The first tables were used for rituals and meals, with the daiban and an as their basic form. Later, sutra desks were made, and in the Muromachi period, dashifuzukue appeared, and the two were separated into desks for writing.

食事用テーブル

甲板の形には長方形、方形、楕円(だえん)形、円形などがある。甲板を折り畳むものや、引き出して広く使うものもある。材料としては家庭用はほとんど木材で、ナラ、ブナ、サクラ、カバなどが使われる。実用品として甲板の表面にメラミン化粧板を張り付けたものが普及しているが、最近では木製のものに人気がある。高級品にはチークやウォールナットの化粧板が使われる。標準的な寸法は1人分として幅60センチメートル、奥行45～50センチメートルを見込めばよい。甲板の高さは60～70センチメートルが適当である。

応接用テーブル

甲板の形は長方形のものが多い。材料は食事用テーブルとほぼ同じであるが、高級なものが好まれる。甲板の高さは40～60センチメートル程度である。

応接用テーブルの小型のものをいう。数個のテーブルが重ね合わせられるようになっていて、必要に応じて分けて使う形式のものをネストテーブルという。

長方形のものが多いが、楕円形およびその変形、円形などもある。材料としては木製とスチール製およびその混合型が一般的であるが、木製は高級向きで、スチール製および混合型は実用向きである。オフィス用の会議テーブルについてはJIS(ジス)（日本工業規格）があって、寸法のよりどころが決まっており、高さは70センチメートルと67センチメートルになっている。

サイドテーブル

壁面に沿って置く装飾用テーブルのことであるが、もとは配膳(はいぜん)用のものであった。

　なおそのほかに、和室で使うものに座卓とちゃぶ台がある。座卓は和風の応接卓子で、材料にシタン、コクタンなどの唐木(からき)を使うので、唐机(からつくえ)ともいう。脚の形によって雷紋、しゃもじ、ばちなどの呼び名がある。ちゃぶ台は食卓で、脚は固定式と折り畳み式とがある。戦前にはほとんどの家庭で使われた必需品であったが、いまでは椅子(いす)式のテーブルにかわって、あまりみられなくなった。

歴史

西洋

古代エジプトではテーブルは神への供物用と貴族の食事用が基本形であった。ギリシアでも両者は同じ形をしている。古代ローマでは木材のほかにブロンズや大理石のテーブルがつくられ、脚には彫刻が施されてしだいに豪華になった。

　中世になると甲板と脚とを分解できる食卓がつくられた。ルネサンス時代には甲板は脚に固定され、豊富な装飾彫刻が施された。さらにバロック時代になると象眼(ぞうがん)、寄木、塗金が加わっていっそう豪華なものになった。しかし19世紀に入ると、装飾性よりも機能性が重視されるようになり、形は単純になっていった。
