Axe-standing celebration - Ono-tateiwai

...The axe is also the weapon of the god of thunder, and is one of the possessions of the prodigy Kintaro. Woodcutters have a custom of sticking their axe into the trunk of a tree before felling it, and it is thought that the axe was used to tell the fortune of whether the tree could be felled or not. In the Tsugaru region, it was customary for people to go into the mountains on New Year's Day and mark standing trees with their axe to make them their own.
