Japanese: 和名類聚抄 - わみょうるいじゅうしょう

A Chinese-Japanese dictionary from the Heian period. It is also read as "Wamyōruijushō" and abbreviated as "Wamyōshō". It was compiled by Minamoto no Shitagō during the Shōhei period (931-938). There are two versions, a 10-volume version and a 20-volume version. It is a dictionary that labels Chinese words by category, from the heavens and earth to the plants and trees, based on a semantic classification, indicates the source, provides phonetic annotations using similar characters and antonyms, adds explanations in classical Chinese, and writes Japanese names in Man'yōgana. Most of the entries are names of things (nouns), and it has the character of a kind of encyclopedia. It seems to have been in widespread use since the Heian period, and has had a great influence on subsequent dictionaries such as the Ruiju Myōgishō, Iroha Jiruishō, and Setsuyōshū. It is an important resource not only for the study of Japanese language history, but also for the study of ancient culture.

平安時代の漢和辞書。〈わみょうるいじゅしょう〉とも読み，《和名抄》と略す。承平年間（931年―938年）源順(みなもとのしたごう)撰。10巻本と20巻本の２種がある。意義分類により，天地部より草木部に至る部類別に漢語を標出して，出典を示し，類音字や反切によって音注を施し，漢文で説明を加え，和名を万葉仮名で記した辞書。項目は事物の名称（名詞）が大部分で，一種の百科事典的性格をもつ。すでに平安時代からかなり世に行われていたらしく，《類聚名義抄》《色葉字類抄》《節用集》など後続の辞書類にも大きな影響を与えている。国語史学はもちろん，古代文化の研究にも重要な資料である。
