...Miki's teachings, which were rooted in the life of farmers, promised salvation of all life in this world and emphasized humanism and equality, reflecting the desire of the people in this time of change to reform the world. After the Meiji Restoration, his teachings spread from the Kawachi Plain to Osaka, and he began composing doctrinal songs, "Ofudesaki," in 1869 (Meiji 2). When the Ministry of Religion was established in 1872 and systematic top-down indoctrination of the nation was implemented, private religions came under severe oppression, and Miki himself was arrested and detained 18 times. However, he continued to rage at the oppression of the "takayama" (those in power) who prevented divine work, and to appeal for the imminent time when the people in the "valley bottom" would be saved. ...
