The Chinese name for Persian Zoroastrianism when it spread to China via Central Asia. This religion, which was the state religion of the Sassanid Empire, was introduced to northern China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties by Sogdian merchants engaged in East-West trade. Documents indicate that in the Northern Dynasties, Sui, and Tang dynasties, administrators for believers called Safu (Saho) were appointed, and that there were ji shrines in Chang'an and other places during the Tang dynasty. Most of the believers were foreign residents, and the religion had little penetration into Han society. It was suppressed during the anti-Buddhist movement in 845 and declined.
