Oseto - Oseto

The old town name (Oseto-cho) was in Nishisonogi-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture. It currently occupies the southwestern part of Saikai-shi. The old Oseto-cho was formed in 1955 (Showa 30) when Seto-cho, Taira-mura, Matsushima-mura, and Yukinoura-mura merged. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with Seihi-cho, Saikai-cho, Sakito-cho, and Oshima-cho, and became Saikai-shi. National Route 202 runs through the old town area. Taira was also written as Taira in the old days, and Taira-no-zuka is enshrined there. In Yukiura, there is a Shigemori-zuka mound in Komatsu-go that enshrines Taira Shigemori, the head of the Komatsu-naifu, and there are many legends about Taira fugitives. Today, the central settlement is Kashinoura, which flourished as a key port with the development of the Matsushima coalfields. Modern port facilities have been built, and the Seto Strait between Matsushima and Fukushima has been reclaimed, making Fukushima part of the mainland. Houseboats (people living on the water) have also completely disappeared. Matsushima flourished as a whaling base during the Edo period, and in the Taisho period with the development of undersea coalfields, but was closed after a submersion accident in 1934 (Showa 9). In 1981, the Matsushima Thermal Power Plant (total output 1 million kilowatts), a coal-fired power plant, began operation. Yukiura Dam is located upstream of the Yukiura River, and sand dunes have developed at the mouth of the river, which are used as a swimming beach.

長崎県西彼杵(にしそのぎ)郡にあった旧町名（大瀬戸町(ちょう)）。現在は西海市(さいかいし)の南西部を占める。旧大瀬戸町は1955年（昭和30）瀬戸町と多以良(たいら)村、松島村、雪浦(ゆきのうら)村が合併して成立。2005年（平成17）西彼(せいひ)町、西海町、崎戸(さきと)町、大島(おおしま)町と合併、市制施行して西海市となった。旧町域を国道202号が走る。多以良は古くは平とも書かれ、平家塚が祀(まつ)られ、雪浦では小松郷(こまつごう)に小松内府平重盛(しげもり)を祀る重盛塚があるなど、平家落人(おちゅうど)の伝説が多い。現在、中心集落は樫浦(かしのうら)で、松島炭田の開発とともに要津として栄え、近代的港湾施設も整い、福島との間の瀬戸は埋め立てられ、福島は陸続きとなった。家船(えぶね)（水上生活者）もまったくその姿を消している。松島は江戸時代には捕鯨基地として、大正時代には海底炭田の開発によって栄えたが、1934年（昭和9）の水没事故によって閉山。1981年には石炭専焼火力発電所の松島火力発電所（総出力100万キロワット）が運用を開始している。雪浦川上流には雪浦ダムがあり、河口には砂丘が発達、海水浴場に利用されている。
