The Ismailis succeeded in rallying the support of the Berbers in North Africa through a secret movement, and invited Ubayd Allāh al‐Mahdī (?‐934), who claimed to be of the descent from Ali and Fatimid, from Syria to Ifriqiya, where he became the Mahdī (savior), and in 909 overthrew the Aghlabids and made them caliphs.
