An island located in the southern part of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Along with Saipan, which is nearby to the north, it was the site of fierce fighting between Japan and the United States during the Pacific War (1944). Huge prehistoric stone columns remain. It is now a self-governing territory, after having been a US trust territory. During the Japanese colonial period, sugar cane was produced there, but now cattle are raised and vegetables are grown. 101 km2 . 3,136 people (2010).
