Japanese: 豊田[村] - とよた

A village in Shimominochi County in northern Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,237 (1995). A mountain village located from the eastern foot of Mt. Madarao, which forms the border with Niigata Prefecture, to the west bank of the Chikuma River, with the Madarao River, a tributary of the Chikuma River, flowing through the center. The JR Iiyama Line and National Route 117 run along the west bank of the Chikuma River. Half of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness, with only about 20% being arable land. Agriculture is the only industry, and rice and apple cultivation are the mainstays in the narrow alluvial plains along the Chikuma River. Enoki mushroom cultivation, which started as a side job in the winter, is also thriving.

長野県北部，下水内（しもみのち）郡の村。人口5237(1995)。新潟県との県境をなす斑尾（まだらお）山の東麓から千曲川西岸にかけて位置する山村で，中央を千曲川支流の斑尾川が流れる。千曲川の西岸に沿ってJR飯山線，国道117号線が縦断する。村域の半分を山林･原野が占め，耕地は2割程度にすぎない。農業が唯一の産業で，千曲川沿いの狭小な沖積地での稲作とリンゴ栽培が中心であり，冬季の副業から始められたエノキタケ栽培も盛ん。
