A town (eup) adjacent to the military demarcation line in the north of Gangwon-do, South Korea (Republic of Korea). It belongs to Cheorwon-gun (area 765.36 sq km, population 47,901, 2000). Population 5,238 (2000). In 1931, it was promoted from a village (myeon) to an eup. After the Korean War, it was transferred from North Korean to South Korean control. As it is adjacent to the military demarcation line, 97.3% of the total area is military land, and only Hwaji-ri is inhabited by eup residents. Before World War II, it was a key location for road and rail transport, but during the Korean War, it was completely abandoned. The Cheorwon Plain, a basalt plateau, is a rice-producing region.
