[Died] 13 February 2007. Perth, Australia. Australian novelist. Real name Monica Elizabeth Knight. She was known for her dry, comedic novels with many eccentric characters, and especially for her affectionate portrayals of women. She grew up in a German-speaking British family and moved to Perth, Australia in 1959. Her first novel, Palomino, which she began writing in the late 1950s, was not published until 1980 because publishers were put off by the content. In 1976, she published her first collection of short stories, Five Acre Virgin. His other works include The Newspaper of Claremont Street (1981), Mr. Scobie's Riddle (1983), and An Innocent Gentleman (2001). He also wrote radio drama scripts. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1988, and was named a Living National Treasure in 1997.

Died: December 8, 1933. Irish geologist from Dublin. Graduated from the University of Dublin and became a professor there (1897). He emphasized the role of heat from radioactive materials in crustal movement, and explained the periodicity of crustal movement in terms of the periodicity of heat dissipation and accumulation, announcing the so-called thermal cycle theory of crustal movement (1924). He is also known for estimating the age of the Earth to be about 100 million years, and for improving and inventing thermometers, steam calorimeters, and photometers. He was a member of the Royal Society of London (1892). His main work was Radioactivity and the History of the Earth's Surface (1924).
