...In the 12th century, Western Europe began to wear a vest-like outer garment called a corselet, which was fastened at the front, but it was not until the 16th century, when Spanish fashion, which emphasized a slim waist, became popular that it began to be used as underwear. Basquines, made of linen or leather with whalebone, wood, or ivory, and metal corsets, which were inspired by armor and made by blacksmiths, were created and worn by not only women but also men and children. …12世紀になると，西ヨーロッパでコルスレcorseletと呼ばれる，前で紐締めする胴衣形の外衣が着用されるようになったが，下着として用いられるようになったのは16世紀の，細い胴を強調したスペイン風モードの流行によってである。麻布もしくは皮革に鯨のひげ，木，象牙などを入れて成形したバスキーヌbasquineや，甲冑にヒントを得て鍛冶屋がつくったという金属製コルセットがつくられ，女性ばかりでなく男性や子どもにまで用いられた。17世紀には胴衣そのものに鯨のひげを刺したり，のりで固めたりしたコール･ピケcorps piquéが出現したが，さらに18世紀にかけて鯨のひげを細かく斜めに刺し込んで立体感を強調したコール･バレネcorps baleinéが用いられるようになった。…
