A type of shade trellis, this Western-style gazebo has climbing plants such as roses and wisteria entwined around it, giving it the appearance of an outdoor corridor. The name is derived from the Italian word for grape trellis. It is also called a "green corridor." It has been known since ancient Egypt and spread in Italy during the Renaissance. Pergolas are not protected from the rain because they have an open top, but they do serve to extend the interior of a room to the outdoors, cool the terrace, and block views from the neighboring second floor. Materials include aluminum, flexible sheets, and wood. [Jin Nakamura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
