This is cancer that develops in the bile duct from the liver to the duodenum, and includes gallbladder cancer. Bile duct cancer refers to cancer that develops in the bile duct that comes out from the liver. In 1997, 8,029 people died from bile duct cancer. Recently, it has become common to detect cancer at an early stage using ultrasound examinations and contrast methods using endoscopes. Gallbladder cancer is more common in middle-aged and elderly women, and is more likely to develop if there are gallstones, and gallstones are found in 50 to 80% of gallbladder cancer cases. There are some differences in symptoms between gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer. Gallbladder cancer has almost no early symptoms, but severe abdominal pain can appear as a symptom of gallstones, a complication. As the cancer progresses, pain occurs from the right side of the abdomen to the upper abdomen, but this is characterized by a dull pain and is not the severe pain of gallstones. Other symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, and general fatigue, and as the disease progresses, jaundice appears. A characteristic symptom of bile duct cancer is the gradual progression of jaundice. There is no abdominal pain, but there is a feeling of pressure or discomfort in the right side of the abdomen. As the disease progresses, symptoms such as loss of appetite, weight loss, and general fatigue appear, just like with gallbladder cancer.

肝臓から十二指腸に至るまでの胆道にできる癌(がん)で，胆嚢(たんのう)癌も含む。胆管癌といえば，肝臓の外側から出た胆管にできる癌をさす。1997年の胆道癌による死亡者は8029人。　最近では，超音波検査や，内視鏡などを使った造影法によって，早期癌の段階で発見されることが多くなった。胆嚢癌は中高年の女性に多いのが特徴で，胆石があると発生しやすく，胆嚢癌の50〜80％に胆石が発見されている。　胆嚢癌と胆管癌では症状にやや違いがある。胆嚢癌は初期症状はほとんどないが，合併症の胆石の症状として激しい腹痛が現れることがある。癌が進行すると右わき腹から上腹部にかけて痛みが起こるが，これはにぶい痛みが特徴で，胆石のような激しい痛みとは違う。このほか，発熱，吐き気，嘔吐(おうと)，食欲不振，体重減少，全身倦怠(けんたい)感などがあり，さらに進行すると黄疸が現れる。　胆管癌の特徴的な症状は，黄疸が徐々に進行してくること。腹痛はないが，右わき腹に圧迫感や不快感がある。進行すると胆嚢癌と同様に，食欲不振，体重減少，全身倦怠感などがある。
