...Awa Shijira is said to have been created by Uma Hana of Ataka Village (now Tokushima City) at the end of the Edo period, inspired by the wrinkles that form when the fabric is wet from rain, and through repeated improvements and ingenuity. The fabric Hana developed was sold by Abe Jyubei, a heavy fabric wholesaler, under the name "Tatae Stripes."
