Certificate of succession - Tetsugishomon

Japanese:
Certificate of succession - Tetsugishomon

Also called kenmon or renken. A series of documents in chronological order that are made to prove the transfer of land ownership (or possession) rights. They can be found from the mid-Heian period through the Middle Ages. When a piece of land is transferred from A to B, a transfer document is created, and when it is sold, a sales certificate (koken) is created. The new owner inherits the land and a series of documents related to the land from the previous owner, which serve as proof that the owner's rights are legitimate. When a piece of land is divided, one side is given the original document and the other side is given a draft document (copy), and a note is also made to the effect that related documents were not handed over. This originates from the fact that in Japan, documents were the primary means of proving the existence of land ownership, but it is also a good historical material for examining the evolution of rights relationships and socio-economic conditions over a fairly long period of time.
