Takeo Takei

Japanese: 武井武雄 - たけいたけお
Takeo Takei

He was a children's illustrator, printmaker, book craftsman, and children's story writer. He was born in Okaya, Nagano Prefecture, and graduated from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He started out as a children's illustrator for the picture magazine "Kodomo no Kuni" at the end of the Taisho period, but displayed an astonishingly multifaceted talent. As a children's illustrator and printmaker, he was involved in a wide range of work with his distinctive, highly deformed style of painting, and as a children's story writer, his works include "Ohanashi no Tamago," "Dr. Plague's Dream," and "King Ramram." He was also passionate about bookbinding art, creating the text, illustrations, printing, and binding all by himself, and created 139 books. He also worked hard to protect the copyrights of publishing art, and passed away at the age of 89. His works are collected in three volumes, "Takei Takeo Works," published by Chikuma Shobo, and his collection of children's illustrations and picture books includes "Books and the Surroundings."
