Dekker - Thomas Dekker

Dekker - Thomas Dekker

English playwright and pamphleteer. Apparently born and raised in London, his origins are unknown. He suffered from debts all his life, and was imprisoned several times for this reason, spending nearly seven years in prison from 1613. He wrote more than 40 plays, both alone and in collaboration, mainly between 1597 and 1604, with many collaborations with M. Drayton, H. Chettle, and J. Webster, but most of them have been lost. His comedy The Shoemaker's Holiday (1600), which lovingly depicts the lively life of the common people of London, which he knew well, is one of the masterpieces of Elizabethan drama. Other well-known works include Old Fortunate (1600) and The Honest Courtesan (1604), co-written with T. Middleton. He subsequently produced many pamphlets that realistically depicted the customs of London, including "The Year of Wonders" (1603), which told the story of the death of Queen Elizabeth and the devastation of the plague that raged that year, "The Seven Deadly Sins of London" (1606), and in particular "The ABCs of the Foolish Bird" (1609), which satirized country gentlemen who pretended to be fashionable men.
