Also known as Terai. A vast humid region that stretches along the southern edge of the Himalayas. It is limited to the upper reaches of the Jamuna River in the west and the Brahmaputra River in the east, and occupies southern Nepal, the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and northern West Bengal, and northern Bangladesh. Terai means "swamp," and many springs that originated on the southern edge of the Himalayas once formed marshes. Dense forests developed in the north, and elephants, tigers, and leopards lived there, but now that farmland has been developed through river improvements, there are few traces of the former appearance.
