An indigenous tribe in Mato Grosso state, western Brazil. Population: about 7,000 (1994). They live on the west bank of the Araguaia River, a tributary of the Amazon River, and speak a language belonging to the Ge family. Their occupations are slash-and-burn agriculture, gathering wild plants, hunting, and fishing. They live in permanent villages, but in the dry season they split into several groups and go on gathering trips. Their villages are crescent-shaped with a large square in the middle. They are divided into three exogamous patrilineal clans, and have a clear age hierarchy. After completing their coming-of-age ceremony, the men marry en masse and move into their wives' homes.
