The term refers to the communication of digitalized signals in the form of pulse trains instead of voice signals. It also refers to the system in general for this purpose. In particular, it often refers to the exchange of data between a terminal and a computer in a remote location, or between computers. The hardware for data communication consists of a communication control device (which connects the line, controls transmission and reception, and interprets and edits control signals), a modem (which converts the digital signals handled in the terminal or computer into pulse trains that conform to the specifications of the communication line, and vice versa for reception), and a communication line. In the simplest system, the communication line was an analog public telephone line. Telephone companies or communication carriers provide line services that are suitable for digital data communication. The line services provided by communication carriers include specific lines that use dedicated lines and digital public communication lines. These can be connected to the entire country through a switching center. In addition, public communication lines can be used to communicate with Internet connection providers called network providers. To communicate data within a limited area, such as a LAN (local area network), you can lay your own local line without relying on the services of a communication carrier. In addition to coaxial cables, optical fiber and wireless are also being used, and a global data communications network using communications satellites is also being planned.

The performance of a line is indicated by its transmission rate (the maximum number of pulses that can be sent per second), measured in bits per second (bps), or roughly equivalently, baud. The higher the transmission rate, the wider the frequency bandwidth required for the line.

In data communications, the sender and receiver exchange signals according to certain rules, transmitting data through procedures such as identifying the other party, requesting transmission, starting and ending transmission, and confirming reception. The sender and receiver also confirm the content of the data to be sent, such as the type of data and its purpose, before handing it over. For this reason, the sender and receiver must decide on special symbols or codes equivalent to a password to indicate the procedure. This is called a protocol. Protocols are prepared at several layers, from hardware-level rules related to the operation of communication lines to application-level rules related to the content of the data, and international standardization is underway.

音声信号のかわりにパルス列でデジタル化された信号を通信すること。また、そのためのシステム全般をさす。とくに、遠隔地の端末機とコンピュータ、コンピュータどうしの間でデータの交換を行う場面をさすことが多い。データ通信のハードウェアは、通信制御装置（回線の接続、送信・受信の制御、制御信号の解読・編集などを行う）と、変復調装置（端末機またはコンピュータ内で取り扱われるデジタル信号を通信回線の仕様に適合したパルス列に変換し、受信の場合はその逆を行う）、それに通信回線からなる。通信回線は、もっとも簡単なシステムではアナログの公衆電話回線であった。電話会社または通信業者では、デジタル・データ通信に適合した回線のサービスを行っている。通信業者が提供している回線サービスは、専用線を利用する特定回線と、デジタル公衆通信回線とがある。これらは交換局を通して全国に回線をつなぐことができる。さらに、ネットワーク・プロバイダーとよぶインターネット接続業者までの通信に公衆通信回線を用いることもできる。LAN(ラン)（ローカル・エリア・ネットワーク）のように、限られた範囲内でのデータ通信を行うには、通信業者のサービスに依存しなくても独自にローカルな回線を引くことができる。同軸ケーブルだけでなく、光ファイバー、無線などが利用されており、世界的な規模での通信衛星を使ったデータ通信網も計画されている。

　回線の性能は伝送率（毎秒最大いくつのパルスまで送ることができるか）で示され、ビット毎秒（bps）、またはほぼ等価的にボー（baud）という単位で表される。伝送率が高いほど、回線の周波数帯域を広くとる必要がある。

　データ通信を行うには、送信側と受信側で、ある決まった約束に従った信号のやりとりによって、相手の確認、送信要求、送信開始・終了、受信の確認などの手順を経ながらデータの伝送を行う。また送信するデータの内容も、データの種類や使用目的などを、送信側と受信側で確かめ合いながら受け渡しを行う。このために送信側と受信側で手順を示すための合いことばに相当する特殊な記号や符丁を決める必要がある。これをプロトコルという。プロトコルは、通信回線の運用に関係したハードウェアレベルの規約からデータの内容に関係したアプリケーションレベルの規約まで、いくつかの階層に分けて用意され、国際標準化が進められている。
