Lingnan - Reinan (English spelling)

Japanese: 嶺南 - れいなん（英語表記）Ling-nan

The term means "South of the Five Mountains," and refers mainly to the present-day Guangdong and Guangxi Autonomous Regions of China and northern Vietnam. In the 33rd year of his reign (214 BCE), the First Emperor of Qin led his troops to capture the Nanyue capital of Panyu (Guangdong), and since then, the Chinese dynasties have paid close attention to this region as a source of ivory, rhino horn, pearls, and other goods, as well as a distribution center for goods from Southeast Asia. During the Tang dynasty, the Lingnan Province was established with its capital in Guangdong, and its jurisdiction included Guangdong, Guangxi, and Vietnam.

五嶺の南という意で，主として現在の中国広東省，広西自治区とベトナム北部をさす。秦の始皇帝が始皇帝 33 (前 214) 年に兵を進めて南越の都番禺 (広東) を陥れたのをはじめとして，以来中国歴朝はこの地を象牙，犀角，真珠などの産出地あるいは東南アジア産出品の集散地として注目した。唐代には広東に治府をおく嶺南道が設立され，両広およびベトナムの地を管轄区域とした。
