Murano (English spelling)

Japanese: ムラノ（英語表記）Murano

A region in northeastern Italy, Veneto, Province of Venice, 1.5 km north of the main island of Venice, consisting of three small islands on a lagoon. The islands are connected by bridges over a canal. Since the glass factory was moved from the main island in 1291, it flourished as a production center of Venetian glass and was a resort for aristocrats. In the 15th century, a school of painting and other works was formed, and famous gardens were created (→Venetian School). It is known as a tourist destination, with beautiful mosaic pavements (11th century), the 10th-11th century Church of Santa Maria Ednato, and the 14th century Church of San Pietro Martire with paintings by Giovanni Bellini and Paolo Veronese. The Glass Museum is located here. Area 4.59 km ² . Population 7,500 (1987 estimate).
