1872‐1934 Also known as de Sitter, he was a Dutch astronomer who studied at the University of Groningen. After serving at the Cape Observatory in South Africa and the University of Groningen, he became a professor at Leiden University in 1908 and director of the Leiden Observatory in 1918. He became famous for his general relativistic cosmological model, which he proposed in 1917. According to this model, the density of matter in the universe is zero, but light coming from far away exhibits a redshift, and depending on the coordinate transformation, it is possible to interpret the universe as expanding infinitely as an exponential function of time.
