Willem de Sitter

Also known as de Sitter, he was a Dutch astronomer who studied at the University of Groningen. After serving at the Cape Observatory in South Africa and the University of Groningen, he became a professor at Leiden University in 1908 and director of the Leiden Observatory in 1918. He became famous for his general relativistic cosmological model, which he proposed in 1917. According to this model, the density of matter in the universe is zero, but light coming from far away exhibits a redshift, and depending on the coordinate transformation, it is possible to interpret the universe as expanding infinitely as an exponential function of time.

ド･シッターともいう。オランダの天文学者。フローニンゲン大学に学ぶ。南アフリカのケープ天文台，フローニンゲン大学を歴任ののち，1908年ライデン大学教授，18年よりライデン天文台長となる。彼を有名にしたのは1917年提案の一般相対論的宇宙モデルである。それによれば，宇宙の物質密度は0であるが，遠方からくる光は赤方偏移を示し，座標の変換によっては宇宙が時間の指数関数として無限に膨張すると解釈することも可能である。
