Shigemasa Ohashi

Shigemasa Ohashi
1618-1672 A samurai and calligrapher from the early Edo period.
Born in 1621 (Genna 4). In 1630 (Kan'ei 11), he succeeded the family headship and became a shogunate inspector. He learned calligraphy from his father Shigeyasu and Prince Sonjun of Shoren-in Temple, and popularized it under the name Ohashi-ryu. He also wrote models for the Shoguns Tokugawa Iemitsu and Ietsuna. He passed away on June 30th (Kanbun 12), leap year. He was 55 years old. He was known by the names Kosaburo and Chozaemon. His models include "Suga no Shosho Orai."

元和(げんな)4年生まれ。寛永11年家督をつぎ,幕府の右筆(ゆうひつ)吟味役となる。書を父重保(しげやす),青蓮院(しょうれんいん)の尊純法親王にまなび,大橋流としてひろめた。将軍徳川家光・家綱の手本もかいた。寛文12年閏(うるう)6月30日死去。55歳。通称は小三郎,長左衛門。手本に「菅丞相往来」など。
