A village in Nasu County, northeastern Tochigi Prefecture. Population 5,691 (1995). Located east of Otawara City, it is sandwiched between the Naka River and its tributary, the Houki River, and the central part is made up of hills and plateaus at the end of the Nasu Plain. Paddy fields spread across the lowlands along both rivers, and rice, dairy farming, and livestock farming are carried out. The Kanamaruhara Plateau in the center was once an army training ground, but it was reclaimed after World War II and part of it is now a village-run pasture. It is believed to have been the center of ancient Nasu Province, and is home to the Nasu no Kuni no Miyatsuko Monument (national treasure), one of the three oldest monuments in Japan, and the Samuraizuka Kofun Tumulus (history).
