[Construction of Fustat]
In ancient times, the area around present-day Cairo was the city of Memphis, located in the southwest near the left bank of the Nile River, and the city of Heliopolis in the northeast. Later, immigrants from Mesopotamia established the city of Babylon in a strategic location where the eastern mountains in the south approached the Nile River. Eventually, the Romans built a fort there, and it became their base of rule in the Byzantine period.
