The name of a province in northwestern Romania. In Hungarian, it is called Bihar. Historically, it refers to the area that straddles Bihor County and the current Hungarian Hajdú-Bihar County. When the Dacian Kingdom was established in ancient Transylvania, the Dacians lived here, and even after the Roman conquest of Dacia, the region did not become a Roman province and was inhabited by free Dacians. After the migration period from the 4th to 9th centuries, the chronicles record that in the 10th century, Menumorut, the leader of an alliance of indigenous people (Vlachs and Slavs), ruled this area from Bihor Castle as its base.
