Alcohol lamp - Alcohol lamp (English spelling)

A heating device used as a small heat source. Alcohol (usually industrial ethanol denatured by adding methanol or other substances) is placed in a glass container, and a cotton wick is dipped in it and drawn up to the top of the container's mouth, which is then ignited. To extinguish the fire, cover it with the attached cap. There are also versions with metal containers, and alcohol burners for applications requiring particularly high temperatures.

It is used as a convenient heat source in places where it is difficult to supply heat sources such as gas or electricity, and for experiments in school education, and is also used as a heat source for experiments where exhaust gas from combustion of city gas would be a hindrance (such as quantitative sulfur analysis).

小形の熱源として利用される加熱器具。ガラス製容器中にアルコール（通常はメタノールなどを添加して変成した工業用のエタノール）を入れ、木綿の灯芯(とうしん)を浸して容器の口の上に吸い上げ、これに点火して用いる。消火するときには、付属しているキャップをかぶせる。金属製容器のものもあり、またとくに高温度を要する用途には、アルコールバーナーもある。

　ガス、電気などの熱源を供給しにくい場所や学校教育での実験などに手軽な熱源として利用されるほか、都市ガスの燃焼廃気が妨害となるような実験（硫黄(いおう)定量分析など）の熱源にも利用される。
