A heating device used as a small heat source. Alcohol (usually industrial ethanol denatured by adding methanol or other substances) is placed in a glass container, and a cotton wick is dipped in it and drawn up to the top of the container's mouth, which is then ignited. To extinguish the fire, cover it with the attached cap. There are also versions with metal containers, and alcohol burners for applications requiring particularly high temperatures. It is used as a convenient heat source in places where it is difficult to supply heat sources such as gas or electricity, and for experiments in school education, and is also used as a heat source for experiments where exhaust gas from combustion of city gas would be a hindrance (such as quantitative sulfur analysis).
