Starting from Kizu Station on the Kansai Main Line, it is a 44.8 km long JR West operating line that passes through Shijonawate City and reaches Kyobashi Station. There are also 19.5 km of branch lines between Hanaten and Yao, with a total operating distance of 64.3 km. The Katamachi Line was acquired from Kansai Railroad in 1907 (Katamachi to Hanaten), and in 2013 it was renamed the Katamachi Line when it was combined with the Sakuranomiya Line (Sakuranomiya to Kizu). With the opening of the JR Tozai Line in March 1997, the Kyobashi to Katamachi section was abolished. In recent years, the area has become a commuter town, and the line plays an important role in transportation in the Osaka metropolitan area.
