Uchiosso - The late monk

Date of birth and death unknown. Painter of the early Tang Dynasty (early 7th century) in China. Son of Sui Dynasty painter Weichi Ba Zhina, he was called Xiao Weichi. Originally from Khotan in the Western Regions, he gained fame for painting the customs, Buddhas, Bodhisattva statues, flowers and birds of the Western Regions. He created murals for famous Buddhist temples in Chang'an and Luoyang, and it is said that the witch in his painting of the Demon-Subduing Awakening in the Fugen Hall of Kotakuji Temple in Chang'an looks as if her body is escaping from within the wall. His strong, elastic brushstrokes, like bent iron wire, and his unique use of coloring and shading, are said to have been good at expressing the unevenness (three-dimensionality) of objects.

生没年不詳。中国、初唐（7世紀初期）の画家。隋(ずい)の画家尉遅跋質那(ばつしつな)の子で、小尉遅とよばれた。西域のコータン（ホータン）の出身で、西域の風俗や仏、菩薩(ぼさつ)像、花鳥などを描いて名声を博した。長安や洛陽(らくよう)の有名な仏寺の壁画を手がけているが、長安光宅寺の普賢(ふげん)堂に描いた降魔成道(ごうまじょうどう)図の魔女は、その身体が壁の中から脱け出ているように見えたという話が伝わっている。鉄線を曲げたような弾力性のある強い筆致で、彩色や陰影にも独特のくふうがあり、よく物の凹凸（立体感）を表現したという。
