Daily Mail

Daily Mail
A British popular newspaper founded by Northcliffe in 1896. It was eight pages long and cost an extraordinary 1/2 penny. While maintaining the traditional format of devoting the front page to advertising, it also contained many concise, summarized news articles and interesting reading material. Conservatives criticized it as a paper written by office boys for office boys, but it became a popular morning paper that met the needs of a new readership centered on the new middle class that was rapidly growing at the end of the century. The first issue sold nearly 400,000 copies, which rapidly increased to 500,000 units three years later and 700,000 units four years later.
