It is an annual grass of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). It is native to Central America, and in Mexico it sometimes grows as a weed in corn fields. It is closely related to corn, and is thought to be the origin of corn. It is cultivated as fodder. It produces many tillers from the base, growing into a large stubble that can reach a height of 3-5 meters. It has many leaves, the larger ones being about 1 meter long and 8 centimeters wide. In autumn, it produces tassels at the tips of the stems and female ears in the leaf axils. Both have a shape similar to a pungent corn inflorescence, and the female ears are wrapped in bracts, 4-8 centimeters long, and have several to a dozen slightly flattened, triangular caryopsis tightly packed in two rows.
