?‐536 King of the Ostrogoths. Reigned 534-536. Nephew of King Theoderic. He acquired large lands in Tuscany and was devoted to classical culture. After the death of King Athalarich (reigned 526-534) in October 534, Queen Mother Amalasuntha proclaimed her cousin Theodahad king and tried to rule with him, but Theodahad imprisoned and executed her (535), and Byzantine Emperor Justinian used this as an excuse to start the Gothic Wars. Theodahad promised to abdicate on the condition that he cede Sicily, pay tribute and troops, and then be guaranteed a reasonable standard of living within the Byzantine territories, but he changed his mind when the war situation in Dalmatia improved.
