Japanese: シャコ(鷓鴣) - シャコ

In a broad sense, it is used as a general term for birds in the Phasianidae family, which are larger than quails but smaller than pheasants. In a narrow sense, it refers to the 41 species in the genus Francolinus , which belongs to the Phasianidae family. In the past, the common mantis shrimp F. pintadenus and the Dorian partridge Perdix dauuricae were also called mantis shrimp. In the broad sense, mantis shrimps can be broadly divided into the American quails found in North America (including northern South America) and the mantis shrimps (including the genus Francolin) found in Eurasia and Africa.

広義には，キジ目キジ科の鳥の中でウズラ類よりも大型でキジ類よりも小型の種類の総称として用いる。狭義にはキジ科シャコ属Francolinusに含まれる41種を指す。かつてはコモンシャコF.pintadenusおよびドーリアヤマウズラPerdix dauuricaeをシャコと呼んでいたこともある。広義のシャコ類では，北アメリカ(南アメリカ北部を含む)に分布するアメリカウズラ類と，ユーラシア，アフリカに分布するシャコ類(シャコ属を含む)とに大別できる。
