Founded in London in 1899, this was a new Japanese theatre company of the Taisho period, named after the Stage Society, which was a driving force behind the modern British theatre movement. It was established in 1913 (Taisho 2) immediately after the dissolution of the Bungei Kyokai (Literary Association), by young members of the same company (Kato Seiichi, Sasaki Tsumuri, Yamada Takaya, Yoshida Kozaburo and others), and held its first performance at the Imperial Theatre on November 28 of the same year, featuring GB Shaw's The Devil's Disciple and other plays. Komiya Toyotaka (1884-1966), a critic and German literature scholar who was a student of Natsume Soseki, was in charge of the literary side.
