A former town in Arida County, central Wakayama Prefecture. Occupying the mountainous area in the middle reaches of the Arida River, it is a major producer of mandarin oranges. The central settlement developed as a market town at the mouth of the valley, and lumber is also produced there, being close to the forested area. In January 2006, it merged with Kibi Town and Shimizu Town in Arida County to become Aridagawa Town, Arida County. Area: 119.44 km2 . Population: 9,750 (2003). 和歌山県中部，有田(ありだ)郡の旧町。有田川中流域の山地を占め，ミカン栽培が盛ん。中心集落は谷口の市場町として発達，森林地帯をひかえ製材業も行われる。2006年１月，有田郡吉備町，清水町と合併し町制，有田郡有田川町となる。119.44km2。9750人（2003）。
